A Message From Coach O'Brien

As the last post mentioned, I have been given the opportunity to become the Defensive Coordinator here at Washington and Lee. I have had the pleasure of coaching here the last 3+ seasons as the Defensive Back Coach and Special Teams Coordinator and am excited and eager that Coach Abell has given me this great opportunity and I am ready to begin working with our defensive staff to prepare for the upcoming spring practice and 2012 season. Over these last few years I have gained a great insight on what we need to do to be a successful football program here at W&L. It starts with the type of students that we attract and how they can have an impact on our program. That begins with the incoming class of recruits this year, which we feel might be the best group of defensive recruits to come in at one time in recent memory, and we are still hoping to land 1 or 2 more in regular decision. That being said it certainly is a time of change, but my goal is not to completely alter what we have done here in the past, but to refocus our young, fast and athletic team with renewed enthusiasm that will allow our athletes be just that, athletes.

We have seen how our offense, which is not too technical language or scheme, but predicated on letting the players play to their strengths continue lead the country in many statistical categories. Although defensively we are not going to focus on all of the individual statistics, our main goal is to improve our scoring defense. If we can limit offense from reaching the end zone we are going to be a successful team and the other stats will come accordingly. Not to say we don’t want great success for each individual athlete, because we certainly have our fair share of returning standout performers, however we as a defensive staff feel that our main focus is to make the team the best they can be.

It's my understanding that a team is a reflection of their coach and my expectation is to have our team never to be out worked or out prepared. It is my objective to not wait for a couple of years for our improvements; we have the opportunity right in front of us and will hit the ground running to have an extremely successful 2012 season.

Go Generals!
